It isn’t as difficult as people say it is, but it isn’t as easy as people think it is. To me it can be surprisingly easy to edit together footage and make something good or even decent but when it comes to filming its a whole different thing. I’m not saying that video editing can be easy to anyone, because it isn’t. Some people have it, but don’t know how to put it to good use. Some people don’t get it. It isn’t there fault, and i’m not saying its a problem, but the point i’m trying to get across is that video editing is just a digital form of artistry.
I try to say that in the least arrogant and egotistical way but to be an artist you need creative vision and thats the first step to applying your talents to whichever form of artistry you’re using. I think when people call themselves artists, others just find it arrogant. I can understand that many people say they’re an “artist” and it sounds very arrogant, but now its evolved into something else. When you meet someone talented and ask what they do, they usually say something like I’m a guitarist, musician, painter, chef, etc.. I haven’t heard anyone say “i’m an artist” because i think a few things distort the word. When you hear artist you usually assume its something related to painting or sculpting but now we live in a world where paintings can move and sculptures can shift. People should be proud of what they do, and if they think that they’re “art” isn’t good then they should just keep trying or try something different. Making something you thought up can make you happy, at least for me anyways.
But there comes a problem with any form of being an artist, some have it, some don’t. A little thing called “Perfection”. Some people can be so frustrated by something they create not being absolutely perfect that it can ruin their day, get them depressed, get them angry, or just make them scrap the whole idea and creation altogether. I think that is just a sign of people who aren’t true artists. They should find a way around their problem, or go back however many steps it takes and take a different path to get to where they want. Giving up won’t solve anything. Take a second and imagine how many people in the whole world’s history thought of something great, only to get frustrated and give up on an idea that could have been amazing. For all we know we could have had flying cars by now.
I have had hundreds of ideas to make into videos. To this day i’ve probably made anywhere between 60 to 90 videos. This includes vlogs, music videos, sketches, recuts, every video i’ve made. I’ve even had videos that i never put up or showed anybody. It wasn’t because i thought i could do them better, but because i was done with them. I had done what i had wanted to do. I had made this video, and was happy with it, but felt it was something that didn’t really need to be. The main point of this is that i had set out and done what i had set out to do, and that is all that mattered to me. Which brings me to my next point; Opinions.
I won’t say much to this subject, but i feel that the best advice i can give is this; There are two types of opinions. You have opinions from people you know, people who will talk to you face to face. Then you have the people who just give their opinion whether you want it or not. My advice? Block it all out. It isn’t that simple of course. Subject yourself to all the opinions you can get, whether they be good or bad. Take them all in, and do nothing about it. You’ll reach a point where you can take opinions and some will be useful to you, but going back and messing with your creation isn’t a good thing in my opinion. You have the option of getting opinion on something that isn’t yet complete, but i find that just messes with the vision you had of what you wanted to create, and unless you’re creating for someone else, then its a bad thing. Take the opinions, acknowledge them, but do nothing else. Once you’re used to blanking out opinion, then you’re an artist. Otherwise you’re just a commisioned artist basing your creations on the choices of others.
So what all this mindless banther boils down to is that i do what i do to make myself happy, yet my one vice which probably contradicts all i just wrote, is that i also set out to make others happy, not in terms of their opinions, but to literally make them happy. I set out to make something that didn’t just waste their time, whether they watch it again and again, or never again. Because all artists can find a way to make their fans happy, without changing their creativity or who they are. They just need to be… creative.
